The series was created by Mark Reisman, who also worked on Frasier, and TV Land placed a pilot order on November 10, 2010.

This was the second sitcom in which Kristen Johnston and Wayne Knight worked together as regulars, after previously co-starring on 3rd Rock from the Sun.

Kristen Johnston and Donald Faison were the first actors cast in the series, followed by David Alan Basche and then Wayne Knight.

The show's episode order fluctuated significantly over its run: season two got an additional 10-episode order that was later reclassified as season three, and season four was extended from 12 to 24 episodes before being cancelled with six unaired episodes remaining.

The first season received mixed reviews, scoring 49 out of 100 on Metacritic and 47% on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics saying the show introduced no new elements to the traditional sitcom formula.

Donald Faison was nominated for the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series in 2013, and the series itself received Primetime Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Cinematography for a Multi-Camera Series in both 2013 and 2014.

The series was distributed internationally by Endemol starting in 2011, airing in countries including the Netherlands, South Africa, Canada, New Zealand, Bulgaria, Turkey, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.
