To avoid potential lawsuits from real car manufacturers being portrayed negatively, the producers invented a fictional car brand called Atlantis with the model Amalfi (officially the Atlantis Amalfi CS 1800) for the first season.

The fictional Atlantis Amalfi was actually a first-series Fiat 132 that had been modified with parts from other manufacturers to make it unrecognizable.

Despite the car constantly breaking down on screen, the fictional Atlantis Amalfi reportedly received several real purchase inquiries from viewers at the time due to its contemporary-looking design.

Many filming locations were in Darmstadt and Hamburg; the season one dealership scenes were shot in Hamburg's Eiffestraße 420, using a sales room built from partition walls near the workshop building's cellar entrance.

From episode 5 onward, the Neubert dealership set had to move to a different building, the Ford (formerly Borgward) dealership Otto P. Wulff in Hamburg-Bergedorf, because the original Eiffestraße location was taken over by a real car dealership starting in early 1976.

The Wulff dealership buildings used as a filming location were demolished shortly after shooting for the fourth season, 'Feuerreiter', wrapped.

A car breakdown scene set in Austria was staged on the Silvretta Hochalpenstraße, but the depicted repair shop location was actually about 1.5 kilometers away from where the story placed it, near a chapel and a guesthouse called Pension Christophorus.

Series writer Robert Stromberger also appeared in a minor recurring role as police officer Gräbert in several episodes across the seasons.

The fourth season, 'Feuerreiter', was written by Karl Wittlinger instead of Robert Stromberger because Stromberger had by then moved to work for ZDF.

In the fourth season's opening credits, the previous historical car-footage intro and theme song were replaced with footage of a motorcycle gang called Feuerreiter riding through Darmstadt, and the gang leader's line 'Jesus had twelve disciples, I have 30' echoes a biblical reference.

A recurring gag involves two poor students who first buy a Citroën 2CV and later reappear in the second-to-last episode of 'Feuerreiter' owning the aged Amalfi, now painted in a flower-power design, which they donate to the dealership.
