The series is a spin-off of Space Ghost Coast to Coast, featuring Harvey Birdman as a former superhero from Birdman and the Galaxy Trio who becomes a lawyer defending characters from classic Hanna-Barbera, Warner Bros., and MGM cartoons.

Despite the spin-off connection, creators Michael Ouweleen and Erik Richter had no credited involvement with Space Ghost Coast to Coast, which featured a separate character also named Harvey Birdman created by Evan Dorkin and Sarah Dyer.

The 'Attorney at Law' part of the title actually comes from a different Space Ghost Coast to Coast character, Dr Nightmare, from the episode 'Lawsuit,' also written by Dorkin and Dyer.

The episode 'Turner Classic Birdman' was created specifically to bridge the continuity gap between the original Birdman and the Galaxy Trio and the new attorney premise.

J. J. Sedelmaier Productions produced only the pilot episode but remained credited in every subsequent episode despite having no further involvement in production.

The show was Adult Swim's most expensive original series at the time due to its use of digital ink and paint technology.

After the first episode of season two, production studios Allied Art & Science and Cartoon Network Studios were replaced by Turner Studios, which animated using Adobe After Effects because the previous studios struggled to maintain the fast production pace, causing delays from constant retakes.

The theme song is an edited version of 'Slow Moody Blues' written by Reg Tilsley, and the show also notably features Charlie Steinman's 'It Is Such a Good Night' and an instrumental version of Gianni Morandi's 'La Mia Mania.'
