The series was originally titled HUB, and then The Hub, before being renamed LAX; it had actually been scrapped by NBC during the previous development season in winter 2003 before being revived and announced on December 19, 2003.

NBC greenlit production on the pilot on January 14, 2004, and later picked up the pilot to series on May 17, 2004.

Anthony and Joe Russo signed on as directors of the pilot on February 6, 2004.

Exterior shots for the pilot were filmed in Texas, though sources disagree on whether it was Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport or Fort Worth Alliance Airport standing in for LAX.

Many scenes were shot using a vacant terminal and a disused Boeing 727 at Ontario International Airport, combined with establishing shots of the real Los Angeles International Airport.

The show's theme song was the opening of 'Mr. Blue Sky' by Electric Light Orchestra, and a different excerpt of the same song was used for the opening sequence of the series finale.

In a survey by Philips, LAX received 17% of the votes for most anticipated new series.

The show became a frequent target of jokes due to its poor ratings, with Jay Leno joking that the actual Los Angeles Airport was considering changing its name to avoid being associated with it; the 13 aired episodes averaged 6.52 million viewers, and the show lost 19.09% of the audience its timeslot had held the previous season under Third Watch.
