Top Chef is produced by Magical Elves Productions, the same company behind Project Runway.

The show's hosting duties have changed over the years: Katie Lee hosted season 1, Padma Lakshmi hosted seasons 2 through 20, and season 10 winner Kristen Kish took over starting with season 21.

The show's format includes a Quickfire Challenge that traditionally begins with the host saying, "Your time starts now," and ends with "Hands up, utensils down."

Eliminated contestants are dismissed with the host's catchphrase, "Please pack your knives and go."

Season 6, set in Las Vegas, introduced 'High-stakes Quickfire Challenges' featuring large cash prizes upwards of $10,000, a format that continued in later seasons.

Season 12 introduced the 'Sudden Death Quickfire Challenge,' where the chef with the least successful dish faces immediate elimination unless they win a cook-off.

The season winner's cash prize has increased over time: it was $100,000 for seasons 1-5, $125,000 for most seasons from 6-16 (with a temporary $200,000 for season 8), and permanently raised to $250,000 starting with season 17.

Last Chance Kitchen, a companion web series introduced in season 9, allows eliminated contestants to compete for a chance to re-enter the main competition, with results typically judged solely by Tom Colicchio.

A Top Chef Junior spin-off was originally ordered in 2008 for an eight-episode run on Bravo but never aired and it's unknown if any episodes were even produced; the concept resurfaced nine years later in 2017 on the Universal Kids channel.

In December 2023, Variety ranked Top Chef #97 on its list of the 100 greatest TV shows of all time, and Time magazine had earlier named it one of the Top 10 Returning Series of 2007.
