In the distant future on the planet Earl, colonized by immigrants from Earth centuries ago. "Old technology" has survived in the form of nanomachines that allow female virgins wield Highly-advanced Materializing Equipment (HiME) and become Meister Otomes - bodyguards and warriors that serve the royalty of various kingdoms. Arika Yumemiya has come to Windbloom Kingdom in search of her mother, whom Arika knows was an Otome. On her arrival she meets the top Coral Otome student, Nina Wáng, and Windbloom's heir to the throne, Mashiro Blan de Windbloom. The series follows Arika's progress as a student at Garderobe Academy and the machinations of those desiring the destructive power of the old technology for themselves.

Origins

My-Otome was conceived as the second project of the Mai-HiME series and was internally titled "Mai-HiME Saitou Troupe, 2nd Performance." Instead of a classical sequel, the series uses a "star system" rarely seen in Japanese anime, where characters are reused like actors without any narrative connection to Mai-HiME.

The originally announced working title for the series was "Mai☆MAiD" (Mai-Star-Maid) before being changed to Mai-Otome.

References

The name of the fan shop chain "BACK STAGE" in the series' universe means "stage/backstage" and deliberately plays on the theatrical, actor-like nature of the series' star system concept.

The countries Romulus and Lemus in the series are named after the legendary twins who, according to legend, founded Rome – just as in ancient mythology, the relationship between the two countries ends in conflict, as Lemus is killed by Romulus.

The secret terrorist organization "Schwarz" takes its name from the German word for the color black, while the related organization "Aswad" derives its name from the Arabic word for black.

In the anime, a special weapon called "Akatsuki no Daitachi" appears, whose design originally comes from the series GEAR Senshi Dendoh, where a similar weapon named Akatsuki no Daitachi appeared.

Music

The music for the TV series and the OVA Zwei was composed by Yuki Kajiura, while for the prequel OVA 0–S.ifr– composer Kuniaki Haishima contributed the music.

Trivia

In 2006, a fighting game called "My-Otome Otome Butoushi!!" for PlayStation 2 was released for the series, developed and published by Sunrise Interactive.
