Seina is unlucky, so unlucky that when he stumbles upon a recruiter looking for his senpai Tenchi he gets taken instead. Forced into the Galaxy police, his luck begins to change. A natural to randomly jumping near pirates, he is assigned his own decoy to draw out pirates. His luck brings him into the lives of four women who have a habit of cancelling out his bad luck, turning it into good. Armed with this luck, they pilot the most powerful ships in the Tenchi Universe to defeat the Barta pirates. Now the only uncertainty is whether the sexy Kaunaq, a former model turned GXP officer, sturdy Kiriko, who has known Seina for years, the mysterious Ryoko, a former pirate named after the legendary one, or the childish Neiju, a powerful witch, will win Seina.

Trivia & behind the scenes

/
Origins

Tenchi Muyo! GXP was created as a 10th anniversary project for the Tenchi Muyo! franchise, and was the first entry produced after production shifted from Pioneer LDC to Vap and Nippon TV.

Origins

Unlike the prior two Tenchi Muyo! TV series, which used settings different from Masaki Kajishima's original storyline, GXP was made to conform to Kajishima's own continuity, making it what fans call 'Kajishima Tenchi'.

Origins

According to the afterword of a Kajishima-authored doujinshi published in August 2001, the project was originally developed under the working title 'GP no Takkyubin' (GP Home Delivery).

Origins

The story is set as a side story taking place about a year after the (at the time still unproduced) third OVA series of Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki, following the Galaxy Police headquarters and the GP Academy.

Casting

In the English dub continuity explained in the anime, the Galaxy Police originally intended to recruit Tenchi Masaki himself, but ended up mistakenly enlisting Seina Yamada instead.

Trivia

A novelization titled 'Shin Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki Gaiden: Tenchi Muyo! GXP' began serialization in Fujimi Fantasia Bunko in April 2003, written and illustrated by Kajishima himself, filling in story details not covered in the anime; the anime-equivalent first part concluded with the 14th volume in April 2016, after which a second part called the 'Rensa (Simza) arc' began.

References

Several characters are noted as resembling or referencing characters from Kajishima's earlier work 'Dual! Parallel Trouble Adventure', including Kiriko, Miki and Karen resembling Mitsuki Sanada, and Seina himself resembling Yotsuga Kazuki, with the shared voice cast for characters like Miki/Sanada Mitsuki and Kirsche/Rara Mitsuki being described as a deliberate service to fans aware of the connection.

Trivia

In-universe, the NB robot originally given to Seina malfunctions after modifications by Amane and gains a lecherous personality; the director Watanabe Shinichi usually makes cameo appearances in his own directed works, but in this case NB was not modeled after him but was instead a character Kajishima specifically designed for Watanabe.
