Corner Gas

Creator Brent Butt imagined the show while thinking about what his life would have been like had he stayed in a small Saskatchewan town instead of pursuing stand-up comedy, and he originally developed the storyline for CTV and The Comedy Network.

The series was filmed entirely in Saskatchewan, with interiors shot at Canada Saskatchewan Production Studios in Regina and all outdoor and gas station scenes filmed on location in the small town of Rouleau, whose grain elevator was repainted to read 'Dog River' instead of 'Rouleau'.

In the first-season episode 'Grad 68', the Rouleau water tower still read 'Rouleau' on set, so post-production visual effects were used to digitally repaint it as 'Dog River'.

The Corner Gas and Ruby sets, built in 2003 on boggy land not meant to last long, became a tourist attraction over the years but were demolished on November 4, 2016 after their foundations began sinking; the police station building later collapsed in summer 2021 and the grain elevator burned down on November 5, 2021.

For the 'Surveillance Bush,' the only bush on the otherwise treeless prairie surrounding the town, a cast member would lie down and physically shake it to simulate wind since there was none; it was planted only for the first and last episodes of the series.

Two sitting Canadian prime ministers, Paul Martin and Stephen Harper, made cameo appearances on the show, making Corner Gas the only fictional sitcom (as opposed to sketch comedy) in which sitting prime ministers have appeared.

The rock band The Tragically Hip appeared as 'local kids' practising in Brent's garage in the episode 'Rock On!', performing a rough version of their song 'It Can't Be Nashville Every Night'.

The opening theme 'Not a Lot Goin' On' was written by Craig Northey of the band Odds and Jesse Valenzuela of the Gin Blossoms, while the closing theme 'My Happy Place' was written by Northey and performed by Odds.

The surnames of almost all main and recurring characters (Burrows, Dollard, Humboldt, Jensen, Kinistino, Leroy, Pelly, Quinton, Runciman, Yarbo) are actual names of small towns in Saskatchewan.

On April 6, 2009, Saskatchewan premier Brad Wall signed a proclamation declaring April 13, 2009 (the date of the series finale) 'Corner Gas Day' in the province.

The production company Prairie Pants Productions' associated company, 335 Productions, took its name from the fact that Tisdale, Saskatchewan—Brent Butt's hometown—lies at the junction of Saskatchewan Highways 3 and 35.
