This X-Men anime is the third installment of the 'Marvel Anime' project, a collaboration between Marvel Entertainment, animation studio Madhouse, and Sony Pictures Entertainment Japan, in which renowned Marvel heroes were reimagined for a Japanese audience.

According to former Madhouse president and CEO Jungo Maruta, the studio received complete creative freedom from Marvel to reinterpret the superheroes for the Japanese audience.

The story and series were guided by screenwriter Warren Ellis, who according to Marvel International president Simon Philips created an entirely parallel universe for Marvel with it.

Starting from the fifth episode, a tribute to the victims of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake was inserted at the beginning of the episode.

In the final episode, Iron Man and various renowned X-Men mutants such as Archangel, Colossus, Rogue, Nightcrawler, Deadpool, and Captain Britain appear as guest characters.

Wolverine appears in all four series of the Marvel Anime project (Iron Man, Wolverine, X-Men, and Blade), each time as a guest character around his own story arc.

In contrast to his young, lean appearance in the previous Wolverine anime, Wolverine is depicted in this X-Men series as a wilder and more muscular character, closer to his comic book version.

The series originally aired on Animax in Japan from April 1 to June 24, 2011, and later premiered in the United States on G4 on October 21, 2011.
