Bruce Timm originally intended Freakazoid! to be a straightforward superhero action-adventure show similar to Spider-Man, but executive producer Steven Spielberg pushed for it to become a flat-out zany comedy after every development meeting.

Bruce Timm left the project early because he felt he didn't have a flair for the comedic direction it was taking, after which Tom Ruegger was brought in to redevelop the show from the ground up while keeping some of Timm's original designs.

Casting the lead role proved difficult until writer Paul Rugg, brought in simply to demonstrate the voice during a recording session, ended up being cast himself after Spielberg approved his take on the character.

The show was accused of plagiarizing Mike Allred's comic Madman, and in 2003 Allred revealed that Bruce Timm had told him Madman was a direct inspiration for the series, with the comic referenced during development, though Allred received no credit or compensation.

The character Mo-Ron was renamed Bo-Ron to appease network censors who were concerned the original name would be considered offensive.

A recurring gag in the closing credits lists 'Weena Mercator as the Hopping Woman,' even though no such character ever actually appears in any episode.

Freakazoid! initially struggled in the ratings, partly due to constantly shifting timeslots and an audience skewing older than its intended young target demographic, leading to its cancellation after 24 episodes, but reruns on Cartoon Network later helped it become a cult hit.

Composer Richard Stone and lyricist Tom Ruegger won a Daytime Emmy Award for the main title song in 1996, while Julie Bernstein was later nominated for a Daytime Emmy for the song 'Invisibo.'
