The show serves as a sequel to Tremors 3: Back to Perfection and was created by S. S. Wilson, Brent Maddock, and Ron Underwood, the minds behind the original film franchise.

Brent Maddock and S.S. Wilson had actually written a Tremors-based TV show as early as 1993 under titles like Val & Earl: Monster Hunters, which never got made; many of its plot and monster ideas, such as a giant shrimp and flesh-eating insects, were recycled for Tremors: The Series.

The series was produced simultaneously with Tremors 4: The Legend Begins, with production taking place at Fox Studios Baja Peninsula facilities and on location in nearby Rosarito, Mexico.

Because the Sci-Fi Channel disliked the episode 'Shriek and Destroy,' it aired 'Ghost Dance' in its place, forcing the network to broadcast episodes out of their intended order and requiring several episodes to be re-edited, including a new opening for 'Project 4-12' to explain character Cletus Poffenburger's (Christopher Lloyd) introduction out of sequence.

The pilot episode, which premiered on March 28, 2003, broke records for the Sci-Fi Channel, becoming the network's highest-rated debut episode for a new series at the time.

The show was mistakenly believed by fans to be a direct replacement for the canceled series Farscape, sparking a major backlash from Farscape's fanbase, even though Tremors had begun production months before Farscape's cancellation.

Despite its strong premiere, viewership declined steadily over the following months, and the show was ultimately canceled after just one half-season of 13 episodes due to high costs.

In 2017, Syfy ordered a pilot for a revival series with Kevin Bacon reprising his role from the original film and Vincenzo Natali attached to direct, but Bacon announced via Instagram in 2018 that the network had decided not to move forward with it.
