The young Kimball Kinnison is leaving home for a wider education when a Galactic Patrol ship crashes on his family's land and the dying pilot gives him a mysterious Lens. Half-sentient, the Lens now implanted in his hand becomes the focus of changes in Kim's life including his father's death, a space battle, and an encounter with Galactic Patrol nursing officer Chris. Impelled by the Lens, he discovers a new world of experiences opening before him and he risks his life to save Chris and the Universe.

Reception

Harmony Gold USA created a heavily edited English-dubbed compilation of episodes 1-3 and 5-6, released under the title 'Lensman: Power of the Lens', while the remaining episodes were never dubbed into English.

This Harmony Gold compilation is no longer available on video, though it was released in the UK on a prerecorded PAL-VHS cassette in the late 1980s.

Reception

A Catalan-dubbed version of the series was broadcast in Catalonia, Spain by TV3 in 1994.

Origins

Although the series shares character and organization names as well as central themes with E. E. 'Doc' Smith's Lensman novels, artistic license made the final anime altogether different from the source material.

Reception

The anime was produced with the knowledge and consent of Smith's estate, but the executors were so displeased with the result that they rejected any further adaptation proposals for several years.
