Tsuritama is an original anime story without a literary source material, developed by director Kenji Nakamura, who previously also directed Mononoke, Kuchū Buranko, and C.

The series is set on Enoshima Island and combines a sci-fi youth drama with the theme of fishing.

Ryōta Ōsaka, who voices Yuki Sanada, took this role as his first leading role in an anime.

For the series' official Twitter account, information about extraterrestrials was collected from fans, fitting the theme of the series.

The series' logo was deliberately designed to look like a hand-drawn, slightly skewed draft to create a homemade character that matches the work's free atmosphere; in the opening, the logo even falls apart into individual parts.

For the logo's color scheme, in addition to black, a blue shade symbolizing Enoshima, sky, and sea, and a red shade reflecting the hair color of protagonist Yuki, were designed.

Early logo designs drew inspiration from fish or ancient Chinese inscriptions, and a later design added a protruding shape like a fishing hook to the character 'tsu'.

At the end of broadcasts in the noitamina time slot, a weekly audience competition took place where fans could submit their own voice acting contributions (Aterekoshu).

Due to a COVID-related delay of the series 'Fugō Keiji', Tsuritama was rebroadcast in 2020 as a temporary solution in the same noitamina time slot.

Accompanying the series, a weekly web radio podcast called 'Tsuritama Radio: Sukikatte Talking!' was released, hosted by the voice actors of Yuki and Haru, as well as associated radio CDs.
