Strong Medicine was created and produced in part by Whoopi Goldberg, who also made cameo appearances on the series, and by Tammy Ader.

The show was the highest-rated original drama on basic cable in 2001.

Janine Turner's character Dr. Dana Stowe left the show near the start of the third season, being replaced by Patricia Richardson's Dr. Andy Campbell, a former military doctor.

The storyline in which Dr. Andy Campbell's love interest Dr. Milo Morton dies in a car accident was written into the show following the real-life death of actor Richard Biggs from an undiagnosed heart condition.

Tamera Mowry played Dr. Kayla Thornton, whose twin sister character Keisha was played by Mowry's real-life twin sister, Tia Mowry.

Near the end of the 2004-2005 season, a special episode titled 'First Response' aired as a backdoor pilot for a proposed spin-off series, Strong Medicine: First Response, which would have been the first spin-off of an existing Lifetime original series; Lifetime ultimately did not order it after disappointing ratings.

A Russian remake of Strong Medicine was produced in 2012.

Only the first season of Strong Medicine has ever received a DVD release, a 5-disc set put out by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment on January 10, 2006; as of 2025 no other seasons have been released on physical media.
