7th Heaven became the longest-running series in the history of The WB network, airing from 1996 to 2006 before moving to The CW for its final season.

The series was one of the first major hits for The WB and became the network's most-watched series ever, holding the record for the WB's most-watched hour with 12.5 million viewers on February 8, 1999; 19 of the WB's 20 most-watched hours were episodes of 7th Heaven.

The show received sharply divided reviews: the Parents Television Council named it the best show of 1998-1999 for its family-friendly, moral storylines, while critics like Hillary Frey of Salon called it one of the worst long-running shows on television for its heavy-handed moralizing and Christian propaganda.

When the series moved from The WB to The CW for its final season, ratings dropped sharply, losing 36% of the previous year's audience partly due to a misleading 'Countdown to Goodbye' ad campaign that had promoted the prior season as the series finale before it was unexpectedly renewed.

7th Heaven was the last series produced by Spelling Television to end its run, as the company was shut down about a month after Aaron Spelling's death and folded into CBS Paramount Television.

Following child molestation allegations against star Stephen Collins, the network UP pulled the series from its schedule in October 2014; a brief return in December 2014 was quickly cancelled again before the show eventually returned to UP's lineup in 2015.

In May 2025, a reboot of the series was announced to be in development at CBS Studios, with Anthony Sparks as showrunner and executive producer alongside original cast member Jessica Biel and DeVon Franklin.
