Trivia & behind the scenes

/
Origins

Creator Graham Yost said the show's premise of hallucinating victims mirrored his own creative process, comparing it to spending time alone imagining and talking to characters in his head.

Origins

Variety described Raines as a throwback to 1970s television, being a single-lead detective show that neatly resolves a whodunit within each episode.

Casting

Jeff Goldblum was cast as a homicide detective and Raymond Chandler fan modeled after Philip Marlowe, hiding a tender heart beneath cynical gibes, with Media Life calling his unconventional looks and vocal style an ideal fit.

Casting

Malik Yoba played Charlie Lincoln, Raines' partner who had died before the series began but continued to appear as a hallucination helping Raines on cases.

Filming

The series was filmed in Los Angeles by NBC Universal Television Studio, with Frank Darabont credited as a director.

Reception

After Raines was cancelled, Jeff Goldblum reflected that the experience was fortunate, as it eventually led to his starring role in Law & Order: Criminal Intent.

Reception

Critic Alessandra Stanley described the show as an overly slavish homage to the 1986 series The Singing Detective.

Reception

NBC cancelled Raines after only seven episodes had aired, from March 15 to April 27, 2007.
