The Carrie Diaries is a prequel to HBO's Sex and the City, based on Candace Bushnell's 2010 novel of the same name, and was developed by Gossip Girl producers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage along with former Sex and the City writer Amy B. Harris.

Brendan Dooling originally auditioned for the role of Sebastian Kydd but ended up being cast as Walt, Carrie's friend who struggles with his sexuality, instead.

English model Poppy Delevingne also auditioned for the role of Samantha Jones before it went to Lindsey Gort for season 2.

The first cast member announced for the series was Stefania Owen, who landed the role of Carrie's younger sister Dorrit in February 2012, before AnnaSophia Robb was even cast as Carrie.

After the show's cancellation, showrunner Amy B. Harris revealed that if the series had been renewed for a third season, the character Miranda Hobbes would have been introduced as Mouse's roommate at Harvard.

Metacritic gave the first season a score of 57% based on 23 reviews, indicating 'mixed or average reviews,' while Rotten Tomatoes gave season 1 a 66% approval rating.

The second season premiere received far more favorable reviews than season one, earning a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 7 reviews, with critics praising the introduction of Lindsey Gort as the iconic Sex and the City character Samantha Jones.
