It's about Kuzco, a self-centered and spoiled teen who must survive the trials of Incan public school and pass all of his classes so that he can officially become Emperor. His friend Malina keeps his attitude in check, while the evil Yzma (cleverly disguised as Principal Amzy) and her dim-witted sidekick Kronk are out to make sure Kuzco fails.

Origins

The series was commissioned after The Emperor's New Groove, despite disappointing box office, drew unexpectedly high ratings on Disney Channel and Toon Disney, including a 2002 broadcast premiere that ranked first in its time slot with over a million young viewers.

Executive producer Bobs Gannaway was chosen partly because New Groove director Mark Dindal was his friend from their earlier collaboration on the 1997 film Cats Don't Dance; Gannaway had also worked on Disney spin-offs like Timon & Pumbaa and Lilo & Stitch: The Series.

Casting

J. P. Manoux replaced David Spade as the voice of Kuzco, even though Spade had reprised the role for Kronk's New Groove; Manoux had already voiced Kuzco in other media like a video game and a DVD bonus feature, and critics said his performance was essentially an impression of Spade's.

John Goodman, the original voice of Pacha, was replaced by Fred Tatasciore for the first season before returning to voice the character in season two.

Eartha Kitt won two Annie Awards and two Daytime Emmy Awards for her voice performance as Yzma, while Patrick Warburton and Jessica DiCicco also received award nominations.
