PERSONA 4 the Animation

Persona 4 was developed as a follow-up to Persona 3, retaining its stylish presentation while shifting the setting from an urban city to a rural provincial town, and changing the overall tone from 'dark' to 'warm'.

Art director Shigenori Soejima stated that his underlying vision for the game was to keep an analog feel from the very beginning.

The story is set two years after the events of Persona 3 in the same fictional universe, and includes a scene where the protagonists visit Gekkoukan High School, the setting of the previous game, during a school trip.

The protagonist's Persona, Izanagi, was designed as a stereotypical delinquent gang leader wearing a school uniform (gakuran), and during a school festival cross-dressing contest he dresses as a 'sukeban' with a bamboo sword, referencing the tokusatsu series Sukeban Deka.

Persona 4 received the 'Excellence Award' at both the Japan Game Awards 2009 and the Famitsu Awards 2008, being the only PS2 title to do so in its respective year.

Persona 4 The Golden for PS Vita sold an estimated 147,000 copies in its first four days, making it the best-selling PS Vita game at the time and helping drive hardware sales.

By December 2013, worldwide shipments of Persona 4 The Golden surpassed 700,000 copies, and the Asian (English) version won the PlayStation Awards 'User's Choice Award' two years in a row.

In December 2024, Persona 4 The Golden was selected for the 'PLAYSTATION GENERATIONS AWARDS' PS Vita Generations category, chosen by user vote among past PLAYSTATION PARTNER AWARD winners.

Voice actor Kouhei Morikubo, who played Yosuke Hanamura, recalled that the line 'Let's go, partner!' didn't feel particularly memorable during the game's recording sessions, but he later learned it became a fan-favorite catchphrase.

The character Naoto Shirogane later stars as the protagonist in the spin-off 'Persona x Detective Naoto,' set one year after the events in Inaba, where she awakens a new non-combat Persona called Amatsu-Mikaboshi.
