Dads was created by Wellesley Wild, Alec Sulkin and Seth MacFarlane for Fox and was a joint production by Fuzzy Door Productions and 20th Century Fox Television, recorded in front of a live studio audience.

The series bypassed the traditional pilot order process, with Fox greenlighting it directly to a six-episode straight-to-series order in January 2013 before later expanding it to thirteen, then nineteen episodes for the season.

Tommy Dewey was originally cast as Warner and even shot the pilot in that role, but was replaced by Giovanni Ribisi in April 2013 after the pilot taping.

Erin Pineda was initially cast as Camilla, Warner's wife, but was replaced by Vanessa Lachey in late March 2013.

Brenda Song was the first actor cast in the series, taking on the role of Veronica, the assistant to Warner and Eli.

Dads was universally panned by critics, scoring just 15 out of 100 on Metacritic and an extremely rare 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, whose consensus criticized the show for relying on racist gags.

Critics such as Tim Goodman of The Hollywood Reporter and Matt Zoller Seitz of Vulture specifically singled out jokes involving racial and cultural stereotypes, including a scene where a co-worker is encouraged to dress as a 'sexy Asian schoolgirl' to appeal to Chinese investors.

Despite the negative reviews, Fox did not cancel the series until May 7, 2014, and the already-produced final episode still aired on July 16, 2014.
