An animated series for television based on the Back to the Future trilogy of feature films. Based on the highly successful Back to the Future movie trilogy, this series is set, um, "after" the events of the last film, as the adventures of Marty McFly and Doc Brown in their DeLorean time machine continue. Joining the ride is Clara, (Doc's wife from Back To The Future Part III,) Jules and Verne (their sons) Einstein the dog and Jennifer (Marty's girlfriend). And apparently there's a Tannen in every time as relatives of Biff keep popping up, and creating conflict. Mary Steenburgen and Tom Wilson reprise their roles from the movies. During live portions of the show, Christopher Lloyd reprised his role as Doc Brown and was joined by Bill Nye, who conducted experiments that were used in the show.

Origins

Although the animated series is set after the film trilogy, creator Bob Gale stated it actually takes place in its own alternate timeline rather than being a direct continuation.

Casting

Of all the actors from the live-action films, only Thomas F. Wilson (Biff Tannen) and Mary Steenburgen (Clara Brown) reprised their exact same roles as voice actors in the animated series.

Christopher Lloyd returned to play Doc Brown in live-action wraparound segments bookending each episode, even though the animated Doc was voiced by Dan Castellaneta.

Bill Nye appeared in live-action end-of-episode segments as Doc Brown's lab assistant performing experiments related to each episode's plot, and also served as the show's technical advisor; this was his debut appearance on a nationally broadcast television show and helped lead to him getting his own show, Bill Nye the Science Guy.

During the first season, each episode's post-credits segment featured Biff Tannen telling a joke, a nod to actor Thomas F. Wilson's real-life career as a stand-up comedian.

Reception

The animated series won multiple Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Film Sound Mixing and Sound Editing in both 1992 and 1993.

Trivia

A tie-in comic book series was published by Harvey Comics, written by Dwayne McDuffie with art by Nelson Dewey, including a four-issue mini-series and a three-issue follow-up subtitled "Forward to the Future."
