Creator Emma Moran developed Extraordinary while completing her Master of Arts in Screenwriting at the University of Manchester, from which she graduated in 2020.

Alongside Wedding Season, Extraordinary was part of the first slate of UK productions commissioned by Disney+ under the Star brand, as announced in April 2021.

The main cast, led by Máiréad Tyers alongside Sofia Oxenham, Bilal Hasna, and Luke Rollason, was announced in December 2021.

Ahead of the second series, it was announced at the 2023 Edinburgh Television Festival that Julian Barratt, Rosa Robson, and Kwaku Mills had joined the cast.

Derek Jacobi was cast to provide a voice cameo in the series.

Principal photography for the series took place in London.

Toby MacDonald and Jennifer Sheridan directed episodes across both series, while episode six of series one was directed by Nadia Amrani.

The first series received a 100% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 23 reviews, with an average score of 7.10/10, and was praised by critics such as Time's Judy Berman as an 'instant classic among superhero comedies'.

Extraordinary won Best Comedy Programme at the 2023 Broadcast Digital Awards and received a Best Scripted Comedy nomination, plus a Best Female Comedy Performance nod for Máiréad Tyers, at the 2024 Royal Television Society Programme Awards.
