Origins

The series was created and directed by Ramón Campos, Gema R. Neira and Carlos Sedes for Bambú Producciones, airing on Antena 3 between 2011 and 2013.

Filming

Filming took place mainly on the Magdalena Peninsula, in Santander, using the Palacio de la Magdalena as the Grand Hotel of the fictional story.

Filming

In addition to the palace, sequences were shot in the meadows, forests and beaches of the peninsula, as well as in the town of Bárcena Mayor (which represents Cantaloa) and on the beaches of Liencres and Mataleñas, all in Cantabria.

Origins

The series had Juan José Luna, chief curator of the Prado Museum, as a historical advisor to set the plot during the reign of Alfonso XIII.

References

A novel titled 'El secreto de Ángela' was published, written by María López Castaño and based on an original idea by Ramón Campos, which narrates the life of the character played by Concha Velasco.

The series premiere exceeded 3.7 million viewers in Spain, with a 20% audience share.

Reception

In the international version distributed by Netflix, the original episodes of around 70 minutes were re-edited to 45 minutes each, reorganizing the seasons into 14, 28 and 24 episodes respectively.

Gran Hotel has had numerous international adaptations: in Italy ('Grand Hotel', 2015), Mexico ('El hotel de los secretos', 2016), Egypt ('Secret of the Nile', the first Egyptian series on Netflix), United States ('Grand Hotel', ABC, 2019, cancelled after one season), France ('Grand Hôtel', TF1, 2020, cancelled after one season) and Greece (Ant1, 2024, set in 1925 Athens).
