The series is based on a literary trilogy by Noëlle Loriot, who also created the show, and was first broadcast on TF1 starting November 11, 1993.

In 2002, lead actress Florence Pernel left the series after playing judge Florence Larrieu, and was replaced by Marine Delterme in a new role, judge Alice Nevers, which also led to a change in the show's title.

To prepare for her role and overcome her preconceptions despite having studied law, Marine Delterme met with real judges, following three of them and even attending a hearing while posing as a court clerk.
