Every villain has a noble cause, and every hero has a dark side. Detective Ryan Lopez is a rising star in Los Angeles' elite Gang Task Force. What the world doesn't know is that long before Ryan became a cop, he pledged allegiance to a different band of brothers – a powerful Latino gang called Los Angelicos. When Ryan's best friend and police partner is senselessly killed by a notorious gang member, Ryan teams up with longtime Task Force member Cassius Green who has been at the forefront of the city's war on organized crime. In this war between law enforcement and gangs, the series explores how only people who really know the streets can win the battle on the streets.

Fox gave the project a pilot order in January 2013 before officially picking up the series for 13 episodes on May 8, 2013.

Casting

Ramon Rodriguez was the first actor cast, taking on the lead role of Ryan Lopez, an undercover figure infiltrating the LAPD, in February 2013.

Tom Berenger was originally cast as tough police chief Sam Chapel but was later replaced by Terry O'Quinn.

RZA and Cliff Curtis joined the cast in March 2013, with Curtis playing gang leader Javier Acosta and RZA playing Cassius Green, described as originally from the tough streets of Oakland.

Despite the initial 13-episode order, Fox cancelled Gang Related on September 2, 2014, shortly after its single season concluded.
