The first three seasons of the series were filmed on the campus of the former Statens Pædagogiske Forsøgscenter (SPF) school, located in Islev, in the city of Rødovre in Denmark.

The series was created by Christian Torpe and premiered on February 9, 2012 on the Danish channel TV 2, before taking a two-year break between the third and fourth seasons, the latter being officially announced on March 8, 2017.

The first episode reached 904,000 viewers, and each episode broadcast during the week gathered more than 600,000 viewers on average in Denmark.

The Danish cancer association (Kræftens Bekæmpelse) criticized the poster for the second season, which showed Rita with a lit cigarette.

Mille Dinesen won the award for Best Actress in a Drama Series at the Monte-Carlo Television Festival in 2012, where the series received a total of six nominations, notably for Carsten Bjørnlund, Lise Baastrup, and Nikolaj Groth.

The series theme song, Speak Out Now, written by Oh Land, Kristian Leth, and Fridolin Nordsø and performed by Oh Land, became the most played song on Danish radio in 2012, which earned its composers the Carl Prize from KODA.

The series spawned a spin-off titled Hjørdis, centered on the character of the same name, broadcast from May 18, 2015 after the third season, consisting of 4 episodes of 25 minutes.

The format was sold abroad for remakes: a Dutch version, a French version titled Sam (broadcast on TF1 notably with Mathilde Seigner then Natacha Lindinger and Hélène de Fougerolles), and an American attempt with Anna Gunn in the lead role, which ultimately was not ordered as a series.
