The series was created by Adam Sztykiel and is based on the book 'Undateable: 311 Things Guys Do That Guarantee They Won't Be Dating or Having Sex' by Ellen Rakieten and Anne Coyle.

NBC purchased the script for the show from Bill Lawrence in October 2012.

Aly Michalka was originally cast as Maddie, a waitress and Justin's love interest, but left the show in April 2013 and was replaced by Briga Heelan playing a similar character named Nicki.

Matthew Wilkas was originally cast as Brett in March 2013, but after the series was picked up he left the role and was replaced by David Fynn.

When both Undateable and Ground Floor were picked up as series, Megan Park was initially cast to replace Briga Heelan as Nicki, but by September 2013 the producers rearranged the two shows' schedules so Heelan could return to play the role on a recurring basis, replacing Park.

In March 2014, creator Bill Lawrence and cast members Brent Morin, Rick Glassman, Ron Funches, and Chris D'Elia went on an 8-city comedy tour to promote the show.

Starting with Season 3, the entire season was broadcast live, with each episode airing two separate feeds—one for the East Coast and one for the West Coast—both made available online afterward, and each episode featured a musical guest.

On November 13, 2015, just 30 minutes before airtime, NBC decided to pre-empt the live episode due to the November 2015 Paris attacks; the following week's live episode referenced the attacks.

Rick Glassman starred in 'The Sixth Lead,' a five-part webseries about an NBC sitcom actor wanting to become a more important cast member, mirroring his role on Undateable.
