A then-unknown Russell Crowe made a guest appearance in one episode as a young man distressed about being called up for the Vietnam War.

The miniseries cost A$6.2 million to produce, with half of the budget financed by the Film Finance Corporation Australia.

The series consisted of six fifty-five minute episodes, each focusing on a particular story and set of characters, with lead characters in one episode sometimes appearing only in supporting roles in another.

Filming took place at several real locations in New South Wales, including St Mary's Concord in Douglas Park, Santa Sabina College in Strathfield, St Scholastica's College in Glebe, Carcoar, and the Australian Catholic University's Mount St Mary Campus, with some interior scenes shot at Saint Ignatius' College, Riverview.

Brides of Christ earned a rating of 30 on its first broadcast, making it the most-watched drama ever produced by the ABC at the time.

When aired in the United Kingdom by Channel 4, the series drew an estimated audience of 6 million viewers, considered a major success by the channel's standards.

The series won multiple 1992 Logie Awards, including Most Popular Telemovie or Mini-Series and Most Outstanding Telemovie or Mini-Series, with Josephine Byrnes winning both Most Popular Actress and Most Outstanding Actress.
