The series concept originated from an 'everyday-life' idea based on the relatable trope of trying to look cute or cool and failing. Author Yūji Yūji wanted to create a 'super-class love story', and his editor, based on his debut work, suggested it would turn out as a 'pathetically funny comedy', which ended up blending into a well-balanced romantic comedy.

The character Masuzu Natsukawa is a big fan of the manga JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, frequently quoting it in conversation, and even personally stocked the club room with copies of the manga at her own expense.

During its broadcast, the anime had a crossover collaboration with another anime from the same publisher, Nyaruko: Crawling with Love! W, including a dedicated joint website and events. This collaboration started after Masuzu's voice actress posted a celebratory song video on Niconico when Nyaruko W's production was announced in autumn 2012.

The opening theme 'Girlish Lover' is performed in-universe by the four main heroines as the 'Self-Producing Maiden Club', and its lyrics contain playful wordplay; it was never sold as a standalone single but was included as a bonus with the first limited-edition Blu-ray/DVD volume.

Special pre-broadcast events were held before the anime's premiere: one at Nihonbashi Mitsui Hall on December 24, 2012, ahead of the TOKYO MX broadcast, and another at ABC Hall on January 8, 2013, ahead of the Asahi Broadcasting airing, with the main voice cast appearing at both.

By March 2021, the light novel series had sold over two million copies combined, and it ranked 8th in the light novel category of the 2014 Electronic Book Award.

The franchise spawned two internet radio shows: 'Shuraba Radio', hosted by Chiwa Saitō and Junji Majima starting in April 2011, and a second show tied to the anime, 'Radio no Konyakusha to Osananajimi ga Shuraba Sugiru', hosted by Chinatsu Akasaki and Ai Kayano, which ran for 38 regular episodes plus two later bonus episodes released in 2014 and 2016 to coincide with drama CD-bundled novel volumes.
