The Proud Family

Creator Bruce W. Smith had previously directed Bebe's Kids (1992), the first animated film targeted at a Black audience, which was a box-office flop; this experience pushed him to keep pursuing diverse animation.

In 1999, Smith co-founded Jambalaya Studio with Hyperion Pictures specifically to create more racially and ethnically diverse animated projects, and The Proud Family was the studio's very first project, entering development in 1998.

The series' title came from a meeting with co-founder Tom Wilhite, when Smith showed him the main characters drawn together as a family portrait.

Penny Proud was partly based on Smith's own daughter Rachel, and Smith described the show as almost an instructional video for her; Suga Mama was named after and modeled on Smith's own mother Mary, who disliked being called 'grandma', while Oscar and Trudy were based on Smith and his wife Denise.

Papi Boulevardez's design was inspired by Cesar Romero's portrayal of the Joker in the 1966 Batman film.

Wizard Kelly is based on former basketball player Magic Johnson, sharing a similar life story and naming pattern, and his wife's name Ginger Snap is a play on Johnson's real wife's nickname Cookie.

Several character names are wordplay references: BeBe and CeCe are named after gospel duo BeBe & CeCe Winans, LaCienega and her mother Sunset are named after Los Angeles streets La Cienega Boulevard and Sunset Boulevard, Dijonay's name puns on Dijonnaise, and the bullying Gross Sisters reference skincare brands Neutrogena, Nivea and Olay despite having dry, ashy skin.

In 1999, Nickelodeon originally commissioned production of The Proud Family before it was eventually picked up by Disney Channel, which officially announced it for its lineup in March 2001.

Lead actress Kyla Pratt recorded her dialogue for the series on days when she wasn't rehearsing or taping for her other show, One on One.

The episode 'Wedding Bell Blues' was pulled from reruns in 2004 because Oscar accuses Suga Mama's new boyfriend of being a gigolo, and 'Who You Calling a Sissy?' was pulled after its 2005 airing over a character being called a sissy; both episodes later returned on Disney+.

The first-season episode 'Don't Leave Home Without It' was kept off streaming services for years due to product placement references to brands like Q-Tip and Rogaine, before eventually being cleared for release.

For its 20th anniversary, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment released a 7-disc complete collection including the entire series, The Proud Family Movie, and shorts on DVD for the first time, on March 15, 2022.

When the series was revived as The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder in 2022, the original cast returned except for Tara Strong (due to casting restrictions) and Orlando Brown (due to his ongoing judicial processes).
