The light novel written by Tarō Tatsunoko was published by Kadokawa Sneaker Bunko from April 2011 to April 2015, with illustrations by Amaou Shiu; since June 2015, a second part titled "Last Embryo" has been published with a new illustrator, Momoko.

The work was ranked 4th in the new talents category of the "Best Light Novel chosen by everyone 2011" ranking, 6th in the "1st Prize of light novel-loving booksellers," and 5th in the light novel category of the "Electronic Book Awards 2014."

By October 2018, the series had exceeded 3 million copies sold worldwide across all editions.

The main character Izayoi Sakamaki was ranked 7th in the male characters ranking of "This light novel is amazing!" 2014 edition.

In the anime version, the heroine Kuro Usagi (Black Rabbit) was originally designed with black fur in the early sketches, but its color was modified for reasons of visual readability.

The author stated that he particularly appreciates hardworking characters like Kuro Usagi, Kudou Asuka, and Riri, which he lists among his favorites, while Izayoi Sakamaki is presented as one of the characters he finds easiest to develop in the plot.

The manga adaptation was announced on February 24, 2012 on The Sneaker WEB website, with two versions drawn separately by Rio Nanamomo (in Comp Ace) and Anri Sakano (in Age Premium).

A television anime adaptation aired from January to March 2013.
