Series creator Debbie Moon came up with the show's title while browsing a bookshop, spotting the word 'wolf' in one book title and 'blood' in another and combining them.

The series was commissioned after the BBC Writersroom website put out an open call for children's drama scripts; Moon was one of eight writers taken to a conference centre in Kent for intensive development, and the project became one of two new original children's dramas commissioned by CBBC.

Wolfblood was filmed in north-east England by the same crew that worked on Tracy Beaker Returns.

Early series were filmed at Hookergate School and in the woods around Rowlands Gill, while from series 4 onwards filming moved to Heworth Grange Comprehensive in East Gateshead (used as 'Hawthorn Comprehensive' in the show) and areas around Windy Nook and Newcastle.

Series 1 was shot between February and May 2012 in three production blocks (episodes 1-4, 5-8, and 9-13).

For series 2, all directors were new to the show, and filming ran from February to May 2013 across four production blocks.

The show spawned a wildlife spin-off, Wolfblood Uncovered, produced by the BBC Natural History Unit and hosted by Bobby Lockwood, which compares scenes from the drama with facts about real wolves such as pack living, territory defense, and fear of fire.

Between series 4 and 5, ten mini-episodes called Wolfblood Secrets were released, featuring cast members from series 4 being interviewed in-character by two mysterious figures, Mr. Smith and Ms. Jones, about wolfbloods, intercut with clips from the main show.

Musician Sam Fender appeared as a guest character named Dean in episode 1.6 of the series.

The show won several awards, including the Royal Television Society Award for Children's Drama in 2013, the Banff Rockie Award for Best Children's Programme (fiction) the same year, and the British Screenwriters' Award for Best British Children's Television in 2015.
