The show marked Kirstie Alley's return to NBC in a starring role since Cheers ended its eleventh-season run in 1993.

The fictional lingerie company at the center of the show, Veronica's Closet, was derived from the real-life company Victoria's Secret, and Variety complained about the similarity in its review.

The role of Bryce was originally played by Jamey Sheridan in an unaired pilot before being recast with Christopher McDonald.

Producers wanted Christopher McDonald for the role of Bryce from the start, but he was unavailable during the original pilot shoot because he was filming Into Thin Air, so the pilot was reshot once he became available.

The series was taped at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, California, on soundstage 25.

The show premiered on September 25, 1997, right after Seinfeld, drawing 35 million viewers, and The New York Times noted it had the highest Nielsen ratings of any new show that season.

Veronica's Closet was a top 10 hit in its first two seasons, ranking No. 3 and No. 5 respectively, airing within NBC's 'Must See TV' Thursday lineup between Seinfeld and ER.

When NBC moved the show out of 'Must See TV' to a new Monday timeslot after Suddenly Susan for the 1999–2000 season, ratings fell more than 50 percent, leading to the show's cancellation in 2000 alongside Suddenly Susan.
