The series was developed by Robert Rodriguez to expand on his 1996 film 'From Dusk till Dawn,' exploring elements he did not have time to delve into originally, particularly the Mesoamerican mythology behind the snake-like creatures.

Rodriguez drew inspiration from the Popol Vuh, the Mayan mythological text, especially the legend of the Hero Twins Hunahpú and Xbalanqué, to deepen the backstories of the show's protagonists.

Rodriguez described the original film as one of his favorite works with Quentin Tarantino and said he wanted to explore how a vampire culture could have existed within Aztec and Mayan mythology.
