Animation Drama Sci-Fi & Fantasy Coastal Love Triangle Coming of Age Heterosexual Unrequited Love Ensemble Cast

Long ago, all humans lived beneath the sea. However, some people preferred the surface and abandoned living underwater permanently. As a consequence, they were stripped of their god-given protection called "Ena" which allowed them to breathe underwater. Over time, the rift between the denizens of the sea and of the surface widened, although contact between the two peoples still existed. This show follows the story of Hikari Sakishima and Manaka Mukaido, along with their childhood friends Chisaki Hiradaira and Kaname Isaki, who are forced to leave the sea and attend a school on the surface. There, the group also meets Tsumugu Kihara, a fellow student and fisherman who loves the sea. Hikari and his friends' lives are bound to change as they have to deal with the deep-seated hatred and discrimination between the people of sea and of the surface, the storms in their personal lives, as well as an impending tempest which may spell doom for all who dwell on the surface.

Trivia & behind the scenes

/
Origins

The project was born from a proposal by P.A.Works president Kenji Horikawa, who wanted to let young team members do what they wanted to do, which led to a collaboration with ASCII Media Works' Dengeki Daioh magazine.

Origins

The anime was preceded by a manga prepublication in Dengeki Daioh magazine starting from the June 2013 issue, even before the anime series aired.

Casting

The main team brings together P.A.Works regulars: director Toshiya Shinohara (RDG Red Data Girl), screenwriter Mari Okada (Hanasaku Iroha) and character designer Yuriko Ishii (Another), while the original character design was entrusted to Buriki.

Filming

To draw the coastal village setting, art director Kazuo Tochi and his team traveled to the city of Kumano in Mie Prefecture, using as models Shinjika Beach, Hadasu Station on the JR Kisei Line, and the former Tomari Elementary School, although no real place names are used in the series.

References

In the world of the series, hood buses and motorized tricycles underwent a different technological evolution from ours, giving the coastal town a particular and slightly offset atmosphere.

Trivia

A web radio program titled Nagi no Asukara-jio was broadcast on the Onsen and HiBiKi Radio Station platforms from September 25, 2013 to April 30, 2014, hosted by voice actors Kana Hanazawa and Ai Kayano, later joined by Mikako Komatsu.

Trivia

The series was the subject of promotional collaborations, notably with the fishing game LINE Fish Island in early 2014 and with the card game Yome Colle, as well as an adaptation into a pachinko machine released in November 2016 under the slogan 'The type A that will surely make you fall in love'.

Music

The first opening theme, 'lull ~そして僕らは~', was replaced from episode 14 by 'ebb and flow', and part of the images of this second version were modified again from episode 21.
