The series was created by Sarah Treem and Hagai Levi, with Treem describing its dual-perspective structure as 'the Rashomon of relationship dramas.'

Ruth Wilson requested to leave the series ahead of season four, and she departed the main cast after her final appearances.

The Hollywood Reporter published an exposé alleging Ruth Wilson had been uncomfortable with the amount of nudity required for her role, naming showrunner Sarah Treem and executive producer/director Jeffrey Reiner as behaving inappropriately toward actors on set.

Sarah Treem later denied coercing Ruth Wilson into nude scenes but admitted the actress was uncomfortable with the nudity required, and confirmed that body doubles were frequently used for her scenes.

Treem corroborated that there had been an internal investigation into director Jeffrey Reiner after he allegedly shared nude photos of a body double with producer, writer and actress Lena Dunham, despite Dunham having no involvement with the show.

Joshua Jackson did not return for the final fifth season, and several other series regulars, including Omar Metwally and Sanaa Lathan, departed early in that season, with Catalina Sandino Moreno appearing only as a guest star in two episodes.

The series won the Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series – Drama in 2015, with Ruth Wilson winning Best Actress and, the following year, Maura Tierney winning Best Supporting Actress.

A Turkish adaptation of the series, titled 'Saklı', premiered on BluTV on November 23, 2021.
