In 2019, during the airing of season six, the show went on hiatus after actress Lori Loughlin became involved in the Varsity Blues college admissions bribery scandal, and Hallmark dropped her from future projects.

The season resumed on May 5, 2019, with Loughlin's scenes edited out of the remaining episodes.

Abigail Stanton's character, along with the child character Cody Stanton, was written off the show halfway through season six via the storyline that Abigail had traveled 'back east' to care for her sick mother, as a result of the scandal.

The series was originally planned to be filmed in Colorado but was instead shot in south Vancouver, British Columbia, on a farm surrounded by vineyards, where the fictional town set of Coal Valley (later Hope Valley) was built in late 2013.

Some of the set trimmings and a stage coach used on the show came from the set of the series Hell on Wheels, and the Thatcher family home is actually the University Women's Club of Vancouver.

Costume designer Barbara Gregusova, who is Slovene-born, said Hallmark asked her to create a 'stylized 1910 period' look for season three that mixed the historically accurate costuming of season one with the more contemporary, colorful style of season two, partly to save time and money.

The show's costuming in later seasons was criticized by some viewers and critics for being less historically accurate than in the first season.

Lori Loughlin is set to reprise her role as Abigail Stanton in season 14 after making a cameo appearance in the season 13 finale.
