Angie Tribeca was created by Steve and Nancy Carell as a spoof of the police procedural genre, and was promoted by TBS as being in the spirit of Police Squad!.

Some gags shown in the show's preview reel were noted by observers as similar to those in the TV cop show satire Sledge Hammer!.

All ten episodes of the first season premiered by airing uninterrupted in a 25-hour TV marathon on TBS on January 17–18, 2016.

Jere Burns not only plays the main role of Lt./Capt. Pritikin 'Chet' Atkins but also portrays his identical twin brother Eric Atkins, his Cajun cousin Capt. Gumbo Atkins, and his Irish cousin Lt. Paddy Atkins.

John Michael Higgins similarly plays a dual role, portraying both Dr. Zaius and his identical twin brother Randall 'Randy' Zaius.

The fourth and final season, subtitled Special Division Force, added Bobby Cannavale to the cast as Angela 'AJ' Geils Jr., the son of Angie and Jay.

The recurring cast across the show's run featured several notable guest stars in unusual roles, including James Franco as Sgt. Edward 'Eddie' Pepper, Chris Pine as a psychopathic zoologist called The Zookeeper, and Alfred Molina as an uncredited expert scientist.

The series received strongly positive reviews, with Rotten Tomatoes giving season 1 an 89% approval rating and seasons 2 and 3 each achieving a 100% approval rating.
