Stitchers was created by Jeffrey Alan Schechter and was picked up to series on September 29, 2014, premiering on ABC Family (later renamed Freeform) on June 2, 2015.

The first season was structured as a miniseries of eleven episodes (ten regular episodes plus one), airing weekly from June 2 to August 4, 2015, followed by a Halloween special titled 'When Darkness Falls' on October 20, 2015.

The show's renewal for a third season was announced in an October 2016 Facebook Live chat, and that season aired from June 5 to August 14, 2017 before Freeform canceled the series on September 15, 2017.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the first season holds a 25% rating based on 16 reviews, with critics saying it was 'neither campy enough to be fun nor intelligent enough to be compelling,' while Metacritic gave it a 48 out of 100 score indicating mixed or average reviews.

The series premiered internationally in Australia on FOX8 on October 14, 2015, and much later in the United Kingdom on SyFy on July 23, 2018, where it was broadcast daily Monday through Friday.
