Lip Sync Battle

Lip Sync Battle is based on an idea by Stephen Merchant and John Krasinski, which started as a recurring segment on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and later The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon before becoming its own show.

The concept took shape when Merchant, Krasinski and Emily Blunt were brainstorming ideas for Krasinski's upcoming appearance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.

In 2014, Merchant, Krasinski and Fallon pitched the show to NBC, which passed on it despite the buzz generated by Emma Stone's lip sync of DJ Khaled's 'All I Do Is Win' on the Late Night segment; NBC's cable channels USA Network and Bravo also passed before Spike picked it up.

In a notable third-season battle, Tom Holland faced off against rumored girlfriend Zendaya and won by channeling Rihanna, wearing latex shorts, a halter-style top, fishnet stockings and bright red lipstick while lip syncing to 'Umbrella'.

The series premiere drew 2.2 million viewers, making it the highest-rated non-scripted premiere in Spike's history and the largest average audience in that timeslot in more than eight years.

By April 2015, performance clips from just the first three half-hour episodes had already generated nearly 100 million online streams, and total audience across the first several episodes (including DVR and reruns) topped 15 million viewers.

The show received a Primetime Emmy Award nomination in the Outstanding Structured Reality Program category in July 2016.

A live hour-long special, Lip Sync Battle Live: A Michael Jackson Celebration, aired in January 2018 from the Dolby Theatre to coincide with Spike's relaunch as Paramount Network, featuring Neil Patrick Harris, Taraji P. Henson and Hailee Steinfeld along with a presentation from Cirque du Soleil's Michael Jackson: One residency.
