The series was reportedly greenlit by History channel after the success of previous miniseries 'Hatfields & McCoys' and 'The Bible', leading to an ambitious production shot in widescreen CinemaScope with an Oscar-nominated director, Roland Joffé.

Rotten Tomatoes gave the miniseries a low score of 13% based on 15 reviews, while Metacritic rated it 52 out of 100 based on 12 reviews, indicating mixed critical reception.
