The series is influenced by the film 'Dead Poets Society' and its creators sought to bring philosophy to all audiences, including in each episode the ideas of a great thinker or philosophical school.

Each of the 40 episodes of the series is named after a different philosopher, in relation to the topics covered in each chapter.

The protagonist calls his group of favorite students 'the peripatetics', in reference to the philosophical school founded by Aristotle.

The premiere on September 14, 2015 on TV3 achieved an audience share of 17.7% with 566,000 viewers, becoming one of the television successes of the season and leader of its time slot.

Among the audience aged 13 to 24, the series reached an audience share of 41.2%, much higher than that of the other age groups.

The series sparked debates among teachers and philosophy professionals over issues such as the alleged machismo of the protagonist, the lack of teaching ethics, the absence of immigrants among students and faculty, and the model of language used by young people.

In November 2015, Atresmedia purchased the rights to dub the series into Spanish; the first season was broadcast on La Sexta between April and July 2016, but after not achieving the expected result, the remaining dubbed seasons were broadcast on Neox between 2017 and 2018.

Netflix purchased the rights to the series in November 2016 to broadcast it internationally in Latin America and the United States, which contributed to its international success.

The third season saw the absences of David Solans (Bruno) and Ana María Barbany (Carmina) during much of the episodes, although both finally returned for the last chapters of the series.

The series led to two international adaptations: a French one titled 'La Faute à Rousseau', whose first season filming was completed in January 2021, and an Italian one titled 'Un professore', broadcast starting in November 2021.

In December 2019, the spin-off 'Merlí: Sapere aude' premiered, starring the character Pol Rubio (Carlos Cuevas) and focused on his university life at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Barcelona, available on Movistar+ and Netflix.

The series' soundtrack went on sale on November 21, 2015 along with the newspaper El Periódico, structured in three blocks ranging from classical pieces (Rimsky-Korsakov, Bach, Debussy, Chopin, Satie) to more upbeat songs by artists such as La Casa Azul, Josep Thió, or Pau Vallvé.
