The Story of Tracy Beaker

The series is adapted from Jacqueline Wilson's 1991 novel of the same name; her earlier book Cliffhanger had been adapted as a two-part TV drama in 1995, but Tracy Beaker was the first of her works to become a full television series.

The first series was filmed during Summer 2001 at Amherst Lodge in Ealing, a former maternity and children's home, which doubled as the care home Stowey House. The building was sold by Ealing Council shortly after the series aired and has since been converted into flats.

Production moved to Cardiff for series 2 and 3, filming at The Hollies, a former nursing home in Llanishen, though no in-story explanation was given for the change and the home continued to be called Stowey House. The Hollies now houses private offices.

Due to the move in filming location from Ealing to Cardiff, several cast members departed the show, including the actors who played Zac Patterson, Ryan Patterson, Peter Ingham and Maxy King.

Series 4 was filmed at Skomer House in Penarth, a former nursing home, and this was the first time the change in filming location was actually addressed within the show, with the home renamed Cliffside. The building has since been redeveloped into the luxury hotel and spa Holm House.

The fifth and final series was filmed at Elm Tree House School in Llandaff, which doubled as a new care home named Elm Tree House inspired by the real building; the school was later demolished for housing development.

Although the show builds on characters from Jacqueline Wilson's books in series 1, from series 2 onwards the storylines diverge significantly from her sequel novels, though the feature-length Movie of Me shares some narrative similarities with the sequel book The Dare Game.

The show's theme song was written and produced by Brian Harris and Nigel Lowis and performed by Keisha White.
