Origins

The Italian sitcom is based on the original French format Caméra Café, created in 2001 by Bruno Solo, Yvan Le Bolloc'h and Alain Kappauf and broadcast by M6; the show's title is a French pun combining 'café' (coffee) and 'caméra cachée' (hidden camera).

The format was exported and adapted in numerous countries besides Italy, including Quebec, Greece, Poland, Spain, Portugal, Morocco, Australia, Flanders, Luxembourg, Réunion, Switzerland, Ukraine, the Philippines, Brazil, Romania, Serbia and China.

Filming

Production of the Italian version began in January 2003 with a pilot episode shot in Paris, using the actual set of the French Caméra Café.

Casting

For the pilot, only Luca Bizzarri, Paolo Kessisoglu, Debora Villa, Alessandro Sampaoli, Giovanna Rei and Paolo Bufalino were cast, since it was not yet certain a network would buy the series, so there was no need to complete the full cast.

Casting

In the pilot, Paolo Bitta's character was named 'Pierpaolo Zecchini' instead of Paolo Bitta, and Luca Nervi's catchphrase was originally 'A torto o a ragione, dai fastidio al padrone!' rather than the later famous 'Questo sì che romperà i maroni alla direzione!'.

Casting

During pilot casting, Carlo Gabardini auditioned for the role of accountant Silvano but was rejected; he was then brought back as a co-writer for the series, and in that role he created the character of Olmo—absent from the original French version—which he ultimately played himself on the director's suggestion.

Trivia

In the pilot, the company the characters work for is named only once, as 'Tondello S.p.A.'; in the regular series the company's name is never revealed.

Reception

After a three-year hiatus, Mediaset announced the return of Camera Café for a fifth season in June 2011, and after another five-year break the show returned for a sixth season in 2017-2018, moving from Italia 1 to Rai 2 and produced by ZeroStories with Rai Fiction; this final season lost both Gabardini (as writer and as Olmo) and Villa (as Patti).
