Long Live the Royals was adapted from a pilot released online in May 2014, developed by creator Sean Szeles in collaboration with Cartoon Network Studios' developmental program for animated series.

The original pilot won an Emmy Award at the 66th annual Primetime Creative Arts ceremony before being expanded into the miniseries.

Prior to creating the show, Sean Szeles worked as a supervising producer on Regular Show, another Cartoon Network production.

The miniseries was the third of its kind to air on Cartoon Network, following Over the Garden Wall in November 2014 and Stakes earlier in November 2015.

Jon Daly, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Gillian Jacobs and Nicki Rapp reprised their roles from the original pilot as King Rufus, Queen Eleanor, Rosalind and Alex respectively.

Kieran Culkin took over the role of Peter from Jeremy Redleaf, who had voiced the character in the original pilot.

Additional characters were voiced by a number of comedians including Fred Armisen, Ellie Kemper, Ken Marino, Alfred Molina, Horatio Sanz, and Peter Serafinowicz.

Each of the four produced episodes lasts eleven minutes, is set at night, and follows a different member of the royal family individually.
