Sonja lives a rather carefree life with her beloved family. The husband Frederick's marijuana business providing family finances a silver lining. But life is shattered and Sonja forced to play a dangerous game with both organized crime and police to protect their children. She can no longer be sure which ones are her friends and who she can trust.

The series is based on the Dutch drama series Penoza from 2010, created by Pieter Bart Korthuis and Diederik van Rooijen.

An American adaptation of the same source material was also made in 2013, titled Red Widow.

Alexandra Rapaport, who plays the lead role of Sonja, won the 2017 Kristallen Award for Best Female Role in a Television Production for her performance in the series.
