The series marks the first time Alvin and the Chipmunks and the Chipettes have appeared together on television since 1990, functioning as a reboot of the franchise.

The show was first announced by Bagdasarian Productions in spring 2010, with a promotional trailer posted to YouTube well before the series actually premiered in 2015.

The series was originally titled 'The Chipmunks and Chipettes' before being renamed to Alvinnn!!! and the Chipmunks.

The show reuses the same core voice actors as the 1980s series, with Ross Bagdasarian Jr. and Janice Karman reprising their roles as the Chipmunks, Chipettes, and Dave, and the theme song was also carried over from that era.

Production was split internationally: the animation and half of the storyboards were handled by Technicolor Productions (formerly OuiDo! Productions) in France, while Bagdasarian Productions in the United States handled voice recording and music production.

The series was put on sale at the October 2013 Mipcom market and was reportedly one of the most-viewed shows presented there, ahead of its actual broadcast premiere.

In December 2023, creator Janice Karman revealed in a phone interview that production on the series had ended the year prior, resulting in the previously announced sixth and seventh seasons being effectively cancelled.

The series was designed as a large-scale production with 260 episodes of 11 minutes each, produced in high-definition computer animation featuring redesigned 'iMunk'-style looks for the characters.
