Origins

HBO ordered the series with an 18-episode pickup in May 2014, and it was deliberately split into two seasons to create a finite, planned-out run rather than an open-ended series.

Filming took place in June 2015 in Park Circle, a neighborhood of North Charleston, South Carolina.

School scenes were shot on the campuses of two real schools: R. B. Stall High School and West Ashley High School.
