Crashing began as two stage plays written by Phoebe Waller-Bridge before being developed into a television series by production company Big Talk.

Waller-Bridge said the stimulus for the plays was to explore the moment something exciting could have happened between two people but doesn't because they bottle it at the last minute, and she wanted to write about what happened to these characters afterward.

The show's setting was inspired by Middlesex Hospital, a real abandoned hospital in Fitzrovia located near Big Talk's production offices.

The series was actually filmed in a disused building of the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel, which was itself inhabited at the time of filming.

W Magazine described the series as Phoebe Waller-Bridge's 'twisted take on Friends.'

Phoebe Waller-Bridge won Best Breakthrough Talent at the 2017 British Academy Television Craft Awards for her work on the show.

Beyond the UK, Crashing was also broadcast on Italian, Spanish and Russian television, and released on DVD by Simply Media on 3 September 2018.
