Carmilla

Carmilla is a single-frame web series co-created by Jordan Hall, Steph Ouaknine, and Jay Bennett, loosely based on the 1872 novella of the same name by Sheridan Le Fanu, and was executive produced by the feminine hygiene brand U by Kotex.

The series was told entirely through vlogs recorded by the protagonist Laura, a format that shaped the show's storytelling for its first three seasons.

Due to budgetary constraints, the actors cast in season one were not members of ACTRA, Canada's performers' union; by season two's pre-production the show could finally afford to help its cast join ACTRA, and several actors of color were cast in new roles.

Natasha Negovanlis and Elise Bauman had previously co-starred together in another web production, Almost Adults from The Gay Women Channel, before reuniting for The Carmilla Movie.

In the film, the character Elle Sheridan was revealed by co-creator Steph Ouaknine to be based on the original 'Laura' character from Le Fanu's source novella, which also inspired her surname in the movie.

The film's ghost characters Emily and Charlotte Brontë are based on the real-life poet and novelist sisters of the same names.

By August 2017, Carmilla had generated over 70 million views on YouTube and had won a Canadian Screen Award as well as a Rockie Award for Branded Content at the Banff World Media Festival in 2016.

A novelization of the web series, written by Kim Turrisi, was published on May 7, 2019.
